Birth of the ILF’s Myanmar Board!

Press Statement

The Irrawaddy Literary Festival (ILF) is unique among literary events around the world. Unlike other festivals, all organisers, staff, and speakers are volunteers, and receive no form of payment for their participation. The ILF is a UK registered Charity, and admission is free to all.

The Festival brings together authors from Myanmar and around the world, and provides an unequalled platform for free speech and open exchange of ideas.

The original vision for the Festival, established by the founding director Jane Heyn and the Festival’s patron, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was to transfer the Festival’s organisation to a Myanmar board to assume responsibility for all aspects of the Festival in Myanmar.

Following a meeting of the international Board of Trustees of the Irrawaddy Literary Festival Charitable Trust and the existing Myanmar ILF organising committee in Yangon on 30 April and 1 May, we are delighted to announce the official establishment of the Irrawaddy Literary Festival Myanmar Board of Trustees with Saya U Nay Oke as chair and Dr. Aung Myint as vice chair.

The Myanmar Board has invited the international Board of Trustees to continue its work in facilitating the participation of international writers at the Festival. The

international Board of Trustees has confirmed that it is very happy to agree to this request and to identify and support top international authors for future Festivals.

The date of the next Festival will be decided and announced by the Myanmar Board soon.
